Pulisce. Sistema. Accoglie i clienti.

———-

There’s a bar in Nebbiuno, a small town in the hills above Lake Maggiore, where the most surprising thing isn’t that coffee is still served the way it used to be. It’s that the person serving it is a woman born in 1924.

Her name is Anna Possi. By now, everyone simply calls her Nonna Anna. She is 101 years old — she’ll turn 102 next November — and every morning she still raises the shutters of Bar Centrale, the place she opened with her husband René on May 1, 1958. Sixty-eight years ago.

Since then, almost everything has changed. Money has changed. Cars have changed. Phones have changed. Color television arrived, then the internet, then smartphones. Telephone tokens disappeared, jukeboxes disappeared, and so did many of the people who once sat at her tables. Anna, however, is still there.

She makes coffee. She cleans. She puts things in order. She welcomes customers. When nobody comes in, she knits, reads the news on her computer, even follows the stock market. And above all, she talks to people. Because Anna says something very simple: she works to be around people. Her bar, she says, isn’t just a bar. It’s a place to listen, give advice and keep someone company.

Perhaps that’s the most beautiful part of her story.

At 101, everyone asks her what the secret is to living so long. As if somewhere behind the counter, among the coffee cups and sugar packets, Anna were hiding the recipe for longevity.

She says there isn’t really a recipe. She eats little. She keeps herself busy. She stays around people. And she keeps having something to do tomorrow.

Which may not be the secret to living to a hundred.

But it might be a very good secret for continuing to live, whatever age is written on your ID.

Tomorrow morning, in Nebbiuno, someone will walk into Bar Centrale and order a coffee.

And Anna will still have something to do.
