Fashion Week Portofino

Portofino. Gli yacht. Le barche che entrano nel porto. Le vetrine. Le borse. I clienti.

——-

A few days ago in Portofino, a little wild boar decided to visit Louis Vuitton. Put like that, it sounds like the beginning of a joke, but it really happened.

First, though, it had to deal with a problem that is fairly unusual even for a wild boar: it had ended up in the sea. According to reports, the piglet had escaped from a yacht moored nearby, jumped into the water and started swimming towards the shore. A short crossing, perhaps, but probably an endless one for him.

Eventually, he managed to find a way out.

And this is where the best part begins.

Because once back on dry land, of all the places he could have chosen in Portofino, the little wild boar walked straight into the Louis Vuitton boutique on the pier. The Maison does indeed have one of its Portofino stores on Molo Umberto I, practically overlooking the water.

Just imagine the scene. Portofino. The yachts. Boats entering the harbour. The shop windows. The bags. The customers. And suddenly a small, soaking-wet wild boar walks into Louis Vuitton without an appointment and, above all, with apparently no intention whatsoever of buying a bag. At that point, one of the sales assistants did something very simple. He picked him up.

In the footage, you can see him walking out of the store holding the piglet in his arms, while around him some people laugh, some applaud and others, naturally, film everything on their phones. For a few seconds, the most elegant boutique in the harbour turns into a sort of wildlife rescue centre. The curious thing is that wild boars in Portofino seem to have a certain familiarity with shopping.

In June, a female with a piglet made it all the way to the tables of Bar Mariuccia in the Piazzetta, forcing the owner to remain cautiously inside. And back in 2022, another wild boar wandered among restaurants and outdoor tables, even making a brief visit to a jewellery shop. Apparently, they have expensive tastes.

But perhaps the most beautiful thing about this story isn’t where the wild boar ended up. It’s what happens around him. Because for a few moments, the yacht, Louis Vuitton, Portofino and everything we normally associate with one of the most exclusive places in the world simply disappear. All that remains is a small, wet and frightened animal. A man who picks him up. And a group of strangers applauding because he made it safely to the other side.

Which, when you think about it, is one of the few forms of luxury that will never go out of fashion.
